Who receives your request
Handy OC sells each request to up to 3 independent local businesses that have agreed to the criteria below. We do not do the work, employ the pros or guarantee their work. Which group receives your request depends on the tasks you pick and the budget answer in the form.
Independent handymen
Requests under $1,000 that need no permit.
- Operates as a sole proprietor or single-member business with no employees doing the work (B&P 7048)
- Takes only jobs under $1,000 in labor and materials that need no permit, and does not split projects to get under the limit
- States in advertising, and tells customers when asked, whether they hold a California contractor license (B&P 7027.2)
- Carries general liability insurance and provides proof on request
- Confirms the price with the customer before starting work
- Contacts customers only as described in the consent text: by phone, text or email about their request, and honors STOP and do-not-contact requests
- Does not resell or share customer information
Licensed contractors
Requests over $1,000, needing a permit, or involving electrical, plumbing or gas beyond a like-for-like swap.
- Holds an active CSLB license in the right classification (B, C-10, C-36 or other relevant class) and provides the number
- Carries general liability insurance and workers' compensation where required, with a bond on file with the CSLB
- Pulls permits when the work requires them
- Gives written estimates and follows California home improvement contract rules
- Same contact and privacy rules as handyman partners
We ask for these things and check what we can, but we are a referral service, not an employer or a licensing board. Before hiring, ask the pro for proof of insurance and, for licensed work, check the license at cslb.ca.gov.
